Delicious homemade rolls recipe passed down from a neighbor's mom. Makes a large batch, perfect for freezing.
Ingredients:
  • 3 (.25 ounce) packages active dry yeast
  • 0.5 cup sugar
  • 6 cups warm water
  • 1 cup shortening, melted
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 5 pounds all-purpose flour
Instructions:
  • Combine yeast with warm water in a large bowl until dissolved. Mix in sugar. In another large bowl, dissolve salt in warm water; add shortening and remaining sugar. Once yeast is foamy, combine salt mixture with yeast mixture.
  • Incorporate half of the flour into the mixture, followed by adding 2 cups of the remaining flour at a time, ensuring to beat well after each addition. Once the dough comes together, transfer it onto a lightly floured surface and knead until it is smooth and elastic.
  • Oil a large bowl, add the dough, and gently coat with oil. Cover with a damp cloth and allow to rise in a warm place until doubled in size, approximately 1 hour.
  • Shape the dough into 30 to 40 rounds and arrange them on lightly greased baking sheets. Cover the rolls with a damp cloth and let them rise until doubled in volume, approximately 40 minutes. While waiting, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Place the rolls in a hot oven for 15 to 20 minutes until they turn golden brown. Enjoy the rolls while they are warm.
