Easy Irish soda bread with buttermilk for a rich, delicious crust - quick and simple with basic baking ingredients.
Ingredients:
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup margarine, softened
  • 4 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • 0.25 cup butter, melted
  • 0.25 cup buttermilk
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) while gently greasing a large baking sheet.
  • In a large bowl, combine flour, softened margarine, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Add 1 cup of buttermilk and egg, stirring until just combined. Transfer the slightly sticky dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead. Form the dough into a round loaf and place it on a baking sheet.
  • Mix melted butter and 1/4 cup buttermilk in a small bowl, then brush it over the loaf. Use a sharp knife to make an 'X' on top of the loaf.
  • Bake in a preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Check after 30 minutes and continue brushing with the butter mixture as needed.
