Create a sweet sourdough starter with yeast, sugar, milk, and flour to share with friends.
Ingredients:
  • 1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast
  • 0.25 cup warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, divided
  • 3 cups white sugar, divided
  • 3 cups milk, divided
Instructions:
  • In a small bowl, combine yeast and warm water. Allow it to sit until it becomes foamy, approximately 10 minutes.
  • In a 2-quart container (glass, plastic, or ceramic), thoroughly mix 1 cup flour and 1 cup sugar. Stir in 1 cup milk and yeast mixture. Loosely cover the container and let sit at room temperature until bubbly. This marks day 1 of the 10-day process.
  • Mix the starter with a spoon on Days 2 through 4. On Day 5, incorporate 1 cup each of flour, sugar, and milk. Stir the starter with a spoon on Days 6 through 9.
  • Add the remaining 1 cup of flour, 1 cup of sugar, and 1 cup of milk to the mixture. Take out 1 cup of the starter to make your first bread. Share 2 cups of the starter with friends (1 cup each) along with this recipe and your favorite Amish bread recipe. Store the remaining 1 cup of starter in a container in the refrigerator or start the 10-day process over again (beginning with the second step).
