Caramelized Granny Smith apples with cinnamon and nutmeg create a delicious sauce for a sweet and savory apple Cheddar skillet cake.
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1.5 cups white sugar, divided
  • 6 Granny Smith apples - peeled, cored, and diced
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons ground nutmeg
  • 2 cups baking mix (such as Jiffy®)
  • 1 cup milk
  • 6 ounces shredded sharp white Cheddar cheese
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) for the perfect bake.
  • In a 9-inch oven-safe skillet over medium heat, melt butter with 1 1/4 cups of sugar until sugar dissolves and mixture caramelizes, about 5 to 10 minutes. Once the mixture simmers, add diced apples and dust with cinnamon and nutmeg. Press down on the apples gently with a spatula until coated and let them soften without stirring, for about 5 minutes.
  • Mix baking mix, milk, shredded Cheddar cheese, and remaining sugar in a bowl until it resembles waffle batter. Spoon mixture evenly over the apples in the skillet; it will spread out on its own while baking.
  • Place skillet in preheated oven until golden brown and batter is firm, about 20-25 minutes. Allow to cool on stovetop until caramelized sugar thickens slightly, for about 5 minutes. Serve on individual plates, drizzle with caramel sauce, and enjoy warm.
