Bake apple butter low and slow for a heavenly aroma and effortless preparation.
Ingredients:
  • 4 pounds apples - peeled, cored, and chopped
  • 2 cups apple cider
  • 0.75 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1 pinch kosher salt
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 star anise
  • 2 whole cloves
  • 3 whole allspice berries
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
Instructions:
  • In a large Dutch oven over medium heat, mix together apples, apple cider, brown sugar, and salt. Stir in cinnamon, star anise, cloves, and allspice. Simmer until apples are tender, about 20-25 minutes with lid partially covering.
  • Preheat the oven to 275°F (135°C) for a perfect bake.
  • Using a slotted spoon, take out whole spices from the pot. Keep cinnamon and star anise aside, discard cloves and allspice. Blend apples until smooth with an immersion blender. Mix in lemon juice and then add back cinnamon and star anise to the pot.
  • Place the mixture in the preheated oven and stir every half hour for about 3 hours until the apple butter thickens and becomes a deeper color. Allow it to cool fully before removing the cinnamon and star anise and transferring it to airtight containers.
