Transform traditional cinnamon rolls with a delicious apple filling for a cozy fall treat. Perfect for weekend baking and guaranteed to satisfy your cravings.
Ingredients:
  • For the dough
  • 3/4 cup (180g) whole milk
  • 1/3 cup (67g) sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 egg, room temperature
  • 1 egg yolk, room temperature
  • 3 1/4 cups (390g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons (85g) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • Cooking spray, for greasing the bowl
  • For the filling
  • 2/3 cup (140g) dark brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup (57g) butter, room temperature
  • 2 medium apples, peeled and chopped into 1/2-inch pieces
  • For the frosting
  • 4 ounces (113g) cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1/4 cup (57g) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup (98g) powdered sugar
Instructions:
  • Prepare the dough: Warm the milk in the microwave until just touchably warm (around 110°F) for about 30 seconds. Combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast in the bowl of a stand mixer with a dough hook. Let it rest until the yeast becomes foamy, approximately 5 minutes. Incorporate the egg and egg yolk, then mix. Add the flour and salt, continue mixing on medium speed until a dough ball forms. Gradually add the butter, 2 tablespoons at a time, ensuring each addition is fully mixed in. Knead the dough on medium speed for 8 minutes until smooth and shiny.
  • Allow the dough to rise: Place the dough ball in a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let it double in size in a warm spot for 1 to 2 hours.
  • Roll out the dough on a floured surface into a 9x14 inch rectangle. Spread softened butter evenly over the dough, leaving a 1/2-inch border. Sprinkle the brown sugar and cinnamon mixture, then top with chopped apples.
  • Roll the dough tightly from the shorter 9-inch side to form the cinnamon rolls. Use a sharp knife or unflavored dental floss to cut the log of dough into nine 1-inch pieces. Place the cinnamon rolls in a greased 9x9 baking dish, cut side up. Cover with plastic wrap or a dish towel and allow them to rise in a warm place until they look soft and touch each other in the dish, for 30 minutes to an hour.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F while the dough rises for 20 minutes.
  • Bake the cinnamon rolls at 350°F until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center roll comes out clean, approximately 25 minutes.
  • Prepare the frosting: Whip cream cheese and butter with a hand mixer until creamy. Mix in maple syrup and vanilla. Gradually add sugar, beating well after each addition until fully incorporated.
  • Once the cinnamon rolls have cooled for 10 minutes, generously spread the luscious frosting over the top before serving them warm. Any leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days. If you enjoyed the recipe, show your love by leaving a star rating below!
