Enhance Granny Smith apple pie with zesty lemon peel for extra flavor depth.
Ingredients:
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 0.5 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 7 cups thinly sliced apples
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 1 recipe pastry for a 9 inch double crust pie
  • 4 tablespoons milk
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to a toasty 425°F (220°C).
  • Combine the sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon peel in a bowl.
  • Place one pie crust in a 9-inch deep-dish pie pan. Add 1/3 of the apples in layers. Sprinkle with sugar mixture, then repeat until all apples are used. Finish by sprinkling with lemon juice and dotting with butter.
  • Lay the second pie crust over the filling, crimp the edges, cut slits on the top, and brush with milk for a shiny finish.
  • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C and bake for 40 to 50 minutes until done.
