Thinly sliced apples layered between flaky pie crusts.
Ingredients:
  • 0.5 cup milk
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.3329999446869 cups shortening
  • 2 egg yolks, beaten
  • 10 apples - peeled, cored and sliced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 egg white
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and generously grease a 10x15 inch jellyroll pan or cookie sheet.
  • Mix 4 cups of flour and salt in a large bowl. Add shortening and mix until it looks like coarse crumbs. Blend in egg yolks and milk with a fork until dough forms. Roll out half of the dough on a floured surface until 1/8 inch thick or large enough to cover the jellyroll pan with excess hanging over the edges.
  • Spread out the apple slices evenly over the bottom crust. Combine 2 tablespoons of flour with sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl. Sprinkle the sugar mixture over the apples. Roll out the remaining dough to cover the apples, then seal and trim off any excess crust. Brush with egg white for a shiny finish.
  • Bake in a preheated oven for 40 to 45 minutes until the apples are tender and the crust is golden brown. If the crust browns too quickly, simply cover with foil and keep baking. Allow to cool before cutting into squares.
