Prep ahead for maximum flavor - bake bread and apples overnight. In the morning, bake and drizzle with luscious caramel sauce.
Ingredients:
  • 1 (1 pound) loaf French bread, sliced
  • 6 eggs
  • 1.5 cups skim milk
  • 0.33333334326744 cup white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 6 apple - peeled, cored and sliced
  • 0.5 cup white sugar
  • 0.5 cup margarine, melted
  • 0.5 cup skim milk
Instructions:
  • Slice the bread into thick 1 1/2-inch pieces and arrange them in a greased 9x13 inch baking pan. Combine eggs, 1 1/2 cups skim milk, 1/3 cup white sugar, and 1 tablespoon vanilla in a large bowl, then pour the mixture over the bread slices.
  • Layer apple slices gracefully on bread. Generously sprinkle with a blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, and 2 tablespoons white sugar. Cover and chill in the refrigerator overnight.
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) in the morning.
  • Bake toast in a preheated oven until golden brown for about an hour. In the meantime, mix together white sugar, flour, and margarine. Then, combine brown sugar, skim milk, and vanilla in a small saucepan, cooking until thickened. Serve the French toast hot with the warm sauce.
