Quick and easy black forest-inspired dessert with canned sour cherries, cream, and chocolate flavors.
Ingredients:
  • 4 tablespoons cornstarch, divided
  • 0.5 (.25 ounce) package unflavored gelatin
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 3 teaspoons vanilla sugar
  • 2 (14.5 ounce) cans morello (sour) cherries in syrup, drained, syrup reserved
  • 2 ounces semisweet chocolate, grated
Instructions:
  • In a small cup, mix 2 tablespoons of milk with 3 tablespoons of cornstarch. In a saucepan, heat the remaining milk and sugar until it boils. Whisk in the cornstarch-milk mixture and cook until the milk thickens, approximately 2 minutes.
  • In a bowl, gently pour 1/8 cup of cold water and sprinkle gelatin powder on top. Allow it to soften for about 1 minute. Then, add 1/8 cup of hot milk mixture to the bowl with the gelatin, stirring constantly until completely dissolved.
  • Take the saucepan off the heat and mix in the dissolved gelatin mixture. Allow the milk mixture to cool completely for 1 to 2 hours.
  • In a chilled glass or metal bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the cream until frothy. Gradually add the vanilla sugar while continuing to beat until firm peaks form. Fold this mixture into the saucepan with the chilled milk mixture.
  • Start by pouring the cherry syrup into a small saucepan. Add 1 tablespoon of cornstarch and bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat until it thickens. Stir in the cherries right away and transfer everything to a glass bowl. Pour the cream mixture on top generously and finish off with a sprinkle of grated chocolate. Chill in the refrigerator until it sets.
