Classic blackberry dumplings in a sweet blackberry sauce, perfect hot or cold, topped with ice cream.
Ingredients:
  • 1 quart fresh blackberries
  • 2 cups white sugar, or to taste
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 cups flour
  • 0.25 cup shortening
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 5 tablespoons milk
Instructions:
  • Combine blackberries, sugar, water, butter, and cinnamon in a large saucepan. Simmer over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until the blackberries break down and create a luscious sauce, approximately 20 to 30 minutes.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Use a knife or pastry blender to cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in egg yolk, then slowly add milk, one tablespoon at a time, mixing with a fork until dough is moistened. Be careful not to add excess milk. The dough is ready when it can be shaped into a ball when squeezed. Divide the dough into two portions and shape into balls.
  • Roll each ball into a 1/4-inch thick round, resembling a pie crust. Cut the dough into 2 to 3 inch wide strips using a floured knife. Repeat with the second ball of dough.
  • After cutting each strip of dough, gently lower 4-inch pieces into the bubbling blackberries. Keep going until all the dough is used. Let the dumplings simmer on medium heat for 15 minutes. Feel free to press them into the juice as they cook, just resist the urge to stir until they're fully done to prevent clumping.
