Stovetop blackberry dessert with sweet lemon sauce and fluffy dumplings.
Ingredients:
  • For the dumplings:
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoon butter
  • 1/3 cup whole milk
  • For the berries:
  • 4 cups fresh or frozen (defrosted and drained) blackberries
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup sugar (depending on how sweet your berries and how sweet you would like your slump to be)
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1/3 cup water
  • Whipping cream or vanilla ice cream for topping
Instructions:
  • Prepare the dumpling dough: Combine flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar in a medium-sized bowl. Add small butter cubes to the mixture. Use a pastry cutter, two knives, or your hands to blend the butter into the flour until it resembles coarse meal. Pour in the milk at once and mix until the flour is just moistened. Gently shape the dough into a ball without overworking it. Set aside.
  • In a 2 quart saucepan, combine berries, sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, lemon zest, and water. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally to coat the berries evenly.
  • Drop spoonfuls of dumpling dough into the boiling berry mixture, ensuring each dumpling is placed around the edges of the pot. Aim for 6 dumplings in total.
  • Simmer with lid on: Reduce heat to a gentle simmer, cover the pot, and cook undisturbed for 25 minutes. Serve the dumplings in bowls, topped with fresh berries. Enjoy with a dollop of cream or a scoop of ice cream, served hot or chilled.
