Classic white bread perfect for sandwiches or dinner.
Ingredients:
  • 1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 0.5 cup warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
  • 1 (12 fluid ounce) can evaporated milk
  • 0.25 cup warm water
  • 0.25 cup shortening, melted
  • 0.25 cup honey
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 6 cups bread flour
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
Instructions:
  • In a small bowl, mix yeast and sugar in 1/2 cup warm water until creamy. Rest for about 10 minutes.
  • Combine yeast mixture, evaporated milk, water, shortening, honey, salt, and 2 cups flour in a large bowl. Mix well. Gradually stir in remaining flour, adding 1/2 cup at a time, and beat thoroughly after each addition. Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic for about 8 minutes. Lightly oil a large bowl, place dough inside, and coat with oil. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place until doubled in volume, approximately 1 hour.
  • After punching down the dough, divide it in half and shape each half into a loaf by rolling and sealing the seams. Place the loaves in buttered 9x5 inch bread pans. Brush the tops of the loaves with melted butter, cover loosely with plastic wrap, and allow them to rise in a warm area until doubled in size, about 30 minutes.
  • Place a small pan of hot water on the bottom shelf of the oven and preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  • Remove the cover from the loaves and bake them until the tops turn a beautiful golden brown, which should take approximately 25 to 35 minutes. After baking, delicately brush some butter onto the crusts while they are still warm. Once cooled, slice and enjoy!
