Classic chewy boiled bagels recipe, perfect for customization.
Ingredients:
  • 4.25 cups all-purpose flour, divided, or as needed
  • 2 (.25 ounce) packages active dry yeast
  • 1.5 cups warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
  • 4 tablespoons white sugar, divided
  • 1 tablespoon salt
Instructions:
  • In a large bowl, mix 1 1/2 cups of flour with yeast. Combine water, 3 tablespoons of sugar, and salt; add to the dry ingredients. Use a mixer on low speed to beat for 30 seconds, scraping the sides of the bowl. Increase the speed and beat for 3 minutes. Finally, knead in additional flour by hand until you have a moderately stiff dough.
  • Transfer the dough onto a dusted surface and knead until it is smooth and elastic, for about 8 to 10 minutes. Cover and allow it to rest for 15 minutes.
  • Divide the dough into 12 equal portions and form into smooth balls. Use your finger to poke a hole in the center and gently stretch the hole to shape the bagel evenly. Cover and allow to rise for 20 minutes.
  • In a large pot, bring a gallon of water to a boil. Stir in the remaining 1 tablespoon of sugar until dissolved. Reduce heat to a simmer.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) for the perfect starting temperature.
  • Once the bagels have beautifully risen, gently place 4 or 5 of them into the simmering water and cook for 7 minutes, remembering to flip them once during cooking. Drain the cooked bagels before enjoying!
  • Place the drained bagels on a lightly greased baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes. Enjoy hot or cold.
