  • 8 breakfast sausage links
  • 1 cup maple syrup
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon, or more to taste
  • 0.25 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 2 quarts vegetable oil for frying
  • 0.75 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.75 cup cornmeal
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon chili powder
  • 0.75 cup milk
  • 1 egg
Instructions:
  • Place wooden skewers in a shallow bowl of water and let them soak for 30 minutes. Drain before using.
  • In a sizzling skillet, sear sausage links, flipping every 2 minutes, until golden brown and cooked through, approximately 6 minutes. Skewer each sausage onto a wooden stick.
  • In a saucepan over low heat, warm maple syrup, cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, stirring until combined, about 2 to 4 minutes. Remove from heat.
  • Heat 2 inches of oil to 360 degrees F (182 degrees C. Prepare a baking sheet with paper towels for draining.
  • In a bowl, combine flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, chili powder, and 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper. Whisk together. Add milk and egg, whisk until batter is smooth. Pour batter into a tall water glass, filling it 3/4 full.
  • Coat each sausage evenly by swirling and dipping it into the batter.
  • Carefully lower 4 battered sausages into the hot oil. Cook, turning every half a minute to a minute, until golden brown all around, for about 3 to 4 minutes. Keep the oil at 360°F (182°C). Remove the corn dogs to the baking sheet lined with paper towels. Enjoy with the maple dip.
