Homemade holiday sugar candy recipe passed down from my mother, perfect for gifting.
Ingredients:
  • 1 pound brown sugar
  • 0.75 cup evaporated milk
  • 0.5 cup chopped walnuts
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions:
  • Grease an 8- or 9-inch square baking dish with butter.
  • In a large, heavy saucepan, combine brown sugar and evaporated milk. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat and cook until the mixture reaches 234-240 degrees F (112-116 degrees C) or until a small amount dropped into cold water forms a soft ball that flattens on a flat surface when removed.
  • Take the pot off the stove and mix in walnuts, butter, and vanilla. Keep stirring with a strong spoon until the mixture becomes matte. Pour the mixture into the pan. Use a knife to cut it into squares, then let it sit until it becomes solid, approximately 5 minutes.
  • Cut the dish into bite-sized squares and keep fresh in a sealed container in the fridge.
