Indulgent butter burgers with savory caramelized onions elevate the flavors of these Wisconsin classics.
Ingredients:
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 0.5 cup chopped onion
  • 0.67 pound 90% lean ground beef
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning (such as Trader Joe's® 21 Seasoning Salute)
  • 1 tablespoon ghee (clarified butter)
  • 2 slices white Cheddar cheese (such as Sartori®)
  • 2 (2 ounce) hamburger buns
  • 2 tablespoons butter (such as Plugra®)
Instructions:
  • In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter and add olive oil. Brown the butter, then reduce heat to low. Add onion, cover, and cook over very low heat, stirring occasionally until very soft, about 20 minutes. Be careful not to caramelize the onion.
  • Season ground beef generously with fragrant Italian seasoning, then shape into two juicy hamburger patties.
  • In a skillet over medium-high heat, melt ghee. Cook hamburger patties for about 3 minutes on each side. Top each patty with cheese and let it melt.
  • Preheat the broiler in the oven and toast the buns until crisp, for 1 to 2 minutes.
  • Assemble the hamburger by placing the patties on the bottom buns, topping with sautéed onions, and spreading 1 tablespoon of butter on the freshly toasted top bun.
