Savory cabbage rolls with beef, sausage, rice, and tomato sauce. Tender and flavorful.
Ingredients:
  • 2 cups uncooked long-grain rice
  • 2 large heads savoy cabbage
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 onions, chopped
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 0.75 cup uncooked long-grain rice
  • 1 pound extra-lean ground beef
  • 0.5 pound pork sausage
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 teaspoons dried dill weed
  • 0.75 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon white sugar
  • 1 (28 ounce) can whole peeled tomatoes, with liquid
  • 1 (26 ounce) can condensed tomato soup
  • 8 bay leaves
Instructions:
  • Thoroughly rinse the rice. In a medium saucepan, combine the rice with 4 cups of water and bring to a boil. Lower the heat, cover, and simmer until all the water is absorbed, approximately 20 minutes.
  • Using a sharp, slender knife, carefully remove the cores from the cabbage.
  • Place a cabbage, with the core facing down, in a microwave-safe container. Pour in 1/2 cup of water, cover, and microwave on high for 10 minutes.
  • Gently cook the other cabbage with the same care for 10 more minutes. Cool slightly, then gently separate leaves and remove tough ribs. Repeat with the second cabbage.
  • Sauté half of the onions in 3 tablespoons of butter until translucent but not browned. Mix the sautéed and raw onions with rice, ground beef, pork sausage, garlic, dill weed, salt, black pepper, and sugar in a large bowl until well combined.
  • Place a generous 2 tablespoons of the mixture onto the center of each cabbage leaf. Carefully fold one end of the cabbage leaf over the mixture, then roll and tuck in the ends to secure the filling inside.
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) for the perfect bake.
  • Line the bottoms of two 9x13-inch casserole dishes with leftover cabbage leaves. Arrange the cabbage rolls snugly in a single layer.
  • Blend tomatoes and condensed tomato soup until smooth. Pour the tomato mixture over the cabbage rolls until they are just covered. Top each dish with 4 bay leaves before tightly covering with foil.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 2 hours until cooked to perfection. Allow to cool for 15 minutes, then unveil the delicious dish. Serve hot and enjoy!
