Celebrate July 4th with a tasty Cake Ball Flag Cake featuring Betty Crocker Cake mix, patriotic candy melts, and whipped vanilla frosting.
Ingredients:
  • 1 box Betty Crocker™ Super Moist™ Yellow Cake Mix (or your favorite flavor)
  • Water, vegetable oil and eggs called for on cake mix box
  • 1 tub (12 oz) Betty Crocker™ Whipped Vanilla Frosting
  • 1 bag (14 oz) red candy melts
  • 1 bag (14 oz) white candy melts
  • 1 cup blue candy melts (from 14-oz bag)
  • Betty Crocker™ Decorating Decors red sugar crystals, if desired
  • White sparkling sugar, if desired
  • Betty Crocker™ Decorating Decors blue sugar crystals, if desired
Instructions:
  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Prepare and bake cake mix according to box instructions for a 13x9-inch pan, using water, oil, and eggs. Allow the cake to cool completely, approximately 1 hour.
  • First, cover a cookie sheet with waxed paper. Then, break up the cake into a large bowl. Add the frosting and mix thoroughly. Use a 1-inch scoop to form the mixture into balls and place them on the cookie sheet. Freeze for approximately 45 minutes until the balls are firm, then move them to the refrigerator.
  • Microwave red candy melts in a 1-quart microwavable bowl on High for 1 minute 30 seconds; stir well. Microwave and stir in 15-second intervals until fully melted and smooth.
  • Take out a small batch of balls from the refrigerator. Using 2 forks, coat each ball individually in the red coating, then place them back on the cookie sheet. Quickly sprinkle red sugar crystals on top. Repeat this process for all 28 cake balls.
  • Dip all 23 cake balls in melted white candy coating and sprinkle immediately with sparkling sugar.
  • Repeat the melting process for the blue candy melts. Dip the remaining 12 cake balls in the blue coating, then immediately sprinkle with blue sugar crystals. Refrigerate all the coated cake balls for about 10 minutes, or until set.
  • Arrange the cake balls on a serving tray to form a flag pattern with 7 rows as follows: 9 red balls, 9 white balls, another 9 red balls, another 9 white balls, 4 blue balls and 5 red balls, 4 blue balls and 5 white balls, and lastly, 4 blue balls and 5 red balls. Cover tightly and serve at room temperature.
