Indulge in flavorful char siu chicken with honey, hoisin, garlic, soy sauce, and Chinese five-spice powder for a quick and easy twist on a classic favorite.
Ingredients:
  • 1 large garlic clove, put through a garlic press or minced and mashed
  • 1/4 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
  • 2 tablespoons honey, preferably amber colored
  • Brimming 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • Scant 2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil
  • 1 3/4 pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs (See Recipe Note)
Instructions:
  • Prepare the chicken marinade by combining garlic, five-spice powder, honey, hoisin sauce, soy sauce, ketchup, and sesame oil in a large bowl. Set aside 3 tablespoons for later. Add the chicken to the bowl, ensuring it is evenly coated. Marinate at room temperature for 30 minutes or refrigerate for up to 24 hours (bring to room temperature before cooking).
  • Grill the chicken: Heat a lightly oiled cast-iron stovetop grill pan over medium-high heat. Remove chicken from marinade, allowing excess to drip off. Grill chicken for 6 to 10 minutes, turning occasionally until juices run clear when pierced with a knife. In the last 2 minutes of cooking, baste chicken with reserved marinade for added flavor and shine.
  • Allow flavors to meld and juices to redistribute by transferring the dish to a platter and resting for 5 to 10 minutes before serving.
