Rich, chewy homemade caramels perfect for snacking or gifting. Easy-to-follow recipe for delicious results.
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 pound light brown sugar
  • 1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • 1.5 teaspoons vanilla extract
Instructions:
  • Assemble all ingredients.
  • In a heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat, melt together butter, brown sugar, condensed milk, corn syrup, and salt. Stir constantly as you bring the mixture to a boil. Using a candy thermometer, cook until the temperature reaches 234-240 degrees F (112-116 degrees C), or until a small amount dropped into cold water forms a soft ball that flattens when placed on a flat surface. Continue cooking at this temperature for 2 minutes.
  • Take it off the heat and gently swirl in the vanilla.
  • Prepare a 9x13-inch baking pan by generously coating it with butter.
  • Once the caramel reaches the desired consistency, transfer it into the prepared buttered pan. Let it cool fully at room temperature.
  • Cut the cooked dish into squares with scissors, then wrap each piece in waxed paper or cellophane for a delightful presentation.
