Homemade Chinese Orange Chicken with sweet citrus flavors, sesame seeds, and scallions. Easy to make in a large skillet. Key ingredient: orange zest for the perfect flavor!
Ingredients:
  • For the orange sauce:
  • Zest from 1 orange
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/3 cup rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • For the chicken:
  • 1 1/2 pounds boneless skinless chicken thighs
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1 large shallot, chopped
  • To garnish and serve:
  • Sliced scallions, garnish
  • Sesame seeds, garnish
  • Cooked white rice , to serve
Instructions:
  • Prepare the flavorful orange sauce by whisking the sauce ingredients in a medium bowl, then set it aside.
  • Prepare the chicken by cutting it into 1-inch cubes. Whisk eggs with salt and black pepper, then combine with the chicken. In a separate bowl, mix flour and cornstarch. Transfer the chicken from the egg mixture to the flour mixture, coating thoroughly.
  • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until it reaches 350 ̊F. You can also test the temperature by sprinkling in some flour - it should fizzle immediately. Fry chicken in two batches, flipping halfway through, until cooked through, about 6-8 minutes total. Drain on paper towels and repeat with remaining chicken.
  • Cook the chicken in the sauce until done, then discard hot oil and clean pan. Add a fresh tablespoon of oil, garlic, and shallot to the pan. Cook for a minute, then add the sauce and simmer until thickened. Add the fried chicken and toss until coated. Let it simmer for a minute or two more. Serve the orange chicken over white rice, topped with sesame seeds and scallions. To store leftovers, keep in the fridge for 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat in a skillet with water over low heat. Make sure to thaw if frozen before reheating.
