Classic chocolate cake with rich homemade frosting, a beloved family tradition.
Ingredients:
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 cup margarine
  • 0.5 cup shortening
  • 0.25 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 0.5 cup buttermilk
  • 6 tablespoons milk
  • 4 cups sifted confectioners' sugar
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 10x15 inch jellyroll pan. In a large bowl, sift together flour, sugar, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt. Set aside.
  • Combine 1/2 cup margarine and shortening with 1/4 cup cocoa and water in a saucepan. Bring it to a boil and cook for 1 minute. Pour this mixture over the flour and sugar, then stir in eggs and buttermilk until well blended.
  • Transfer the batter into the pan and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool for 10 minutes, then frost it while still warm.
  • For the Frosting: In a saucepan, melt 1/2 cup of margarine with milk and 1/4 cup of cocoa until boiling. Cook for 1 minute. Remove from heat, stir in vanilla, then mix in confectioners' sugar. Pour over warm cake.
