Anise sugar cookies - perfect for decorating, crisp and flavorful.
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon anise extract
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 0.5 cup milk
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to a toasty 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and generously grease your cookie sheets.
  • In a large bowl, cream the shortening and sugar until smooth. Add eggs one at a time, then blend in anise extract. Alternate adding flour mixture and milk into the creamed mixture, stirring until just combined. Avoid over-mixing to keep cookies tender.
  • Roll out the dough on a floured surface to 1/4 inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to create desired shapes and place them at least an inch apart on the cookie sheets.
  • Bake in the oven until firm, about 12 to 15 minutes. The cookies should not turn golden brown; if they do, they are overdone. Transfer to a cooling rack and wait for them to cool before frosting.
