Indulge in a festive ornament cake after decorating the tree!
Ingredients:
  • 1 box Betty Crocker™ Super Moist™ White Cake Mix
  • 1 1/4 cups water
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 egg whites
  • 2 tubs (12 oz) Betty Crocker™ Whipped Fluffy White Frosting
  • 1 pouch (17.5 oz) Betty Crocker™ Sugar Cookie Mix
  • 2 tablespoons Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup butter or margarine, melted
  • 1 whole egg
  • Betty Crocker™ Decorating Cookie Icing red, green and white icing (from 7-oz pouches)
  • Yellow sugar
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F. Prepare 2 (9-inch) square cake pans by greasing them with shortening and a dusting of flour, or simply use baking spray with flour.
  • Beat cake mix, water, oil, and egg whites in a large bowl with an electric mixer for 30 seconds on low speed, then for 2 minutes on medium speed. Pour batter into pans and bake for 23 to 28 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool for 10 minutes, then remove from pans and cool completely before slicing each cake horizontally to make 2 layers.
  • Place 1 cake layer, cut side up, on serving plate and generously spread 1/4 of the container of frosting on the cake, leaving a 1/2-inch border. Add the second cake layer, cut side down, and evenly spread another 1/4 of the frosting. Repeat with the remaining cake layers and the rest of the first container of frosting. Set aside 1/2 cup of frosting from the second container. Frost the sides and top of the cake with the remaining frosting. Transfer the reserved 1/2 cup of frosting into a decorating bag with a large round tip and pipe frosting around the top and bottom edges of the cake. Chill until ready to decorate.
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F. Combine cookie mix, flour, butter, and egg in a medium bowl until a soft dough forms. Roll out the dough to 1/4-inch thickness on a lightly floured surface, then use a 4-inch ornament-shaped cookie cutter to create shapes. Place the cutouts on ungreased cookie sheets, spacing them 1 inch apart.
  • Bake for 7 to 9 minutes until lightly browned. Allow to cool for 1 minute, then transfer to cooling racks to cool completely. Decorate with cookie icing and yellow sugar as desired. Use icing to attach cookies to the sides of the cake and place 3 cookies on top.
