Elevate your Mardi Gras cake with your own fun and vibrant decorations!
Ingredients:
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 2 envelopes quick rise active dry yeast
  • 5 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon grated lemon peel
  • 1 teaspoon grated orange peel
  • 1/2 cup lukewarm milk
  • 3 eggs, beaten slightly
  • 4 egg yolks, beaten slightly
  • 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • Plastic baby figurine
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 3 teaspoons milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Purple, yellow, and green decorating sugars
Instructions:
  • In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Let it sit aside.
  • In a large stand mixer bowl, mix together flour, sugar, nutmeg, and salt. Add lemon and orange peel. Create a well in the center and pour in yeast mixture, milk, beaten eggs, and beaten egg yolks. Gently combine. Incorporate 1/2 cup of butter and knead with the dough hook on Low speed until dough forms a ball.
  • On a floured board, knead the dough to smooth and elastic, adding flour if needed. Butter a large bowl with 1 tablespoon of butter. Place the dough in the bowl, ensuring the entire surface is coated with butter. Cover and set aside for 45 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F. Brush a large baking sheet with the remaining butter. Roll the dough on a lightly floured surface, kneading it several times until smooth. Shape the dough into a 14-inch long roll, then form it into a ring on the baking sheet by pinching the ends together.
  • Bake until golden brown, for about 25-30 minutes, then cool the cake on a wire rack.
  • To make the glaze, mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla in a small bowl until smooth. Once the cake has cooled, drizzle the icing on top using a fork. Optional: Decorate with colored sugars and a plastic baby, then serve.
