Boilo: a traditional spiced holiday drink from Pennsylvania coal country, guaranteed to warm you up and lift your spirits for over a century.
Ingredients:
  • 4 cups water
  • 4.5 pounds clover honey
  • 4 oranges, quartered
  • 3 lemons, quartered
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 6 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon caraway seeds
  • 0.5 teaspoon whole allspice berries
  • 0.5 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 0.5 gallon 190 proof grain alcohol
Instructions:
  • Combine water and honey in a large pot over medium heat. Add orange and lemon quarters, raisins, cinnamon sticks, caraway seeds, allspice berries, and cloves. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 30 minutes. Strain mixture into a large pot and let cool briefly before using.
  • Gradually drizzle the grain alcohol into the honey mixture while stirring to blend.
  • Transfer the mixture to bottles, seal with caps, and refrigerate until ready to use. Serve by gently warming in shot glasses.
