Make Chef John's Detroit-style Coney Island hot dogs with rich meat sauce and fresh chopped onion - a delicious taste of home!
Ingredients:
  • 1.5 pounds lean ground beef
  • 2 cups water, or as needed
  • 0.75 cup diced onion, divided
  • 0.33333334326744 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder, or more to taste
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt, or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin, or to taste
  • 0.5 teaspoon celery salt, or to taste
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper, or to taste
  • 8 all-beef hot dogs
  • 8 hot dog buns
  • 0.25 cup prepared yellow mustard, or to taste
Instructions:
  • Prepare all your fresh, high-quality ingredients.
  • In a pot over medium-high heat, mix ground beef, water, 1/2 cup diced onion, ketchup, butter, garlic, chili powder, salt, black pepper, cumin, celery salt, and cayenne pepper using a potato masher or spatula. Keep stirring until the mixture is finely ground and starts to bubble, around 10 minutes.
  • Simmer the beef mixture until the sauce thickens and reduces, about 1 hour on medium-low heat, stirring occasionally. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Heat a large pot of water until it boils vigorously. Add hot dogs and cook until heated through, about 5 to 7 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and place hot dog buns on a baking sheet. Bake until soft and warm, about 2 to 3 minutes.
  • On a plate, assemble each hot dog by placing it in a bun, topping it with meat sauce, drizzling yellow mustard, and sprinkling diced onion. Repeat with the rest of the hot dogs.
  • Savor every delicious bite!
