Decadent holiday treat with a luxurious custard base.
Ingredients:
  • 3 eggs, slightly beaten
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • Dash salt
  • 2 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup light rum
  • 1 or 2 drops yellow food color, if desired
  • Ground nutmeg
Instructions:
  • In a 2-quart heavy saucepan, mix together eggs, granulated sugar, and salt until well combined. Slowly incorporate the milk into the mixture. Cook over medium heat for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring constantly, until the mixture sticks to a metal spoon; then remove from heat. Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla and place the saucepan in cold water until the custard cools. If the custard curdles, vigorously beat it with a hand beater until smooth. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, but no more than 24 hours.
  • Whip cold whipping cream, powdered sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla in a medium bowl with an electric mixer on high until stiff peaks form. Carefully fold in 1 cup of the whipped cream, rum, and food color into the custard right before serving.
  • Transfer the custard mixture into a small punch bowl. Spoon dollops of the remaining whipped cream on top of the custard. Sprinkle with nutmeg before serving. For leftovers, store in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
