Indulge in the French favorite, the croque monsieur: a decadent ham and gruyere cheese sandwich smothered in creamy bechamel sauce. Perfect for a luxurious knife-and-fork experience!
Ingredients:
  • 2 Tbsp butter
  • 2 Tbsp flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • A pinch each of salt, freshly ground pepper, nutmeg, or more to taste
  • 6 ounces Gruyère cheese, grated (about 1 1/2 cups grated)
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (packed)
  • 8 slices of French or Italian loaf bread
  • 12 ounces ham, sliced
  • Dijon mustard
Instructions:
  • Preheat oven to a toasty 400°F.
  • Prepare the béchamel sauce by gently melting butter in a saucepan until it simmers. Stir in the flour and cook until smooth for about 2 minutes. Gradually pour in the milk while whisking constantly until thickened. Take it off the heat and season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Mix in Parmesan and 1/4 cup of Gruyère. Keep the sauce aside.
  • Place bread slices on a baking sheet and toast in a 400°F oven for a few minutes on each side until lightly toasted. For added flavor, consider spreading butter on the slices before toasting. Alternatively, assemble sandwiches as noted in step four and grill in a skillet, finishing under the broiler with the bechamel sauce.
  • Assemble the sandwiches by brushing half of the toasted slices with mustard. Layer on the ham slices and approximately 1 cup of the remaining Gruyère cheese. Finally, place the other toasted bread slices on top.
  • Top the sandwiches with a generous amount of béchamel sauce and a sprinkle more of Gruyère cheese.
  • Achieve bubbling perfection: Arrange on a broiling pan. Bake in the oven for 5 minutes, switch on the broiler, and broil for an extra 3 to 5 minutes until the cheese topping is bubbly and lightly browned. Transform it into a Croque Madame by topping with a fried egg.
