Elegant and versatile pastry perfect for brunch or dessert. Festive addition to any buffet table.
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons warm water or milk
  • Chopped nuts
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F. In a medium bowl, combine 1 cup of flour and 1/2 cup of softened butter using a pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Drizzle 2 tablespoons of water over the mixture and toss with a fork until just combined.
  • Shape the pastry into a ball, then divide it in half. Flatten each half into a 12x3-inch rectangle, placing them about 3 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.
  • In a 2-quart saucepan, bring 1/2 cup butter and 1 cup water to a rolling boil. Take off the heat and swiftly mix in almond extract and 1 cup flour. Stir energetically over low heat for about 1 minute until a ball of dough forms; take off the heat. Beat in eggs until smooth, then spread half of the topping over each rectangle.
  • Bake for approximately 1 hour until the topping is golden and crisp. Then, transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely.
  • Combine all glaze ingredients in a medium bowl until smooth and spreadable. Spread the mixture over the top of the pastry and sprinkle with nuts.
