Decadent Depression-era cake with sugar, shortening, raisins, flour, and spices - no eggs, butter, or milk needed!
Ingredients:
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 cups raisins
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
Instructions:
  • Combine shortening, water, raisins, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, cloves, and sugar in a saucepan. Simmer for 10 minutes, then let cool.
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and generously grease a 9x13-inch baking pan.
  • Fold the flour and baking soda into the cooled raisin mixture until just combined, then transfer the batter into the prepared pan.
  • Roast in the oven as it warms up for 45 minutes.
