Decadent caramel chocolate bars for a luxurious treat.
Ingredients:
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 3 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2/3 cup baking cocoa
  • 1 1/2 cups firm butter or margarine
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped walnuts
  • 1 bag (12 oz) semisweet chocolate chips (2 cups)
  • 48 caramels
  • 2 cans (14 oz each) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 bag (6 oz) semisweet chocolate chips (1 cup)
  • 1 teaspoon shortening or vegetable oil
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a 15x10x1-inch pan with foil, ensuring there is about 2 inches of overhang on the sides.
  • Combine flour, brown sugar, cocoa, and egg in a large bowl. Use a pastry blender to cut in 1 1/4 cups of butter until crumbly. Mix in walnuts and set aside 3 cups of the crumb mixture. Press the remaining mixture firmly into the pan and top with 2 cups of chocolate chips. Bake for 15 minutes.
  • In a sturdy 2-quart saucepan, melt caramels, sweetened condensed milk, and remaining 1/4 cup of butter over low heat, stirring constantly. Pour this decadent mixture over the crust, then sprinkle the reserved crumb mixture on top. Bake for another 20 minutes until it's bubbling deliciously. Allow it to cool completely for about 2 hours before serving.
  • In a small microwavable bowl, microwave 1 cup of chocolate chips and shortening on High for 1 to 3 minutes. Stir halfway through until the mixture is melted and thin. Drizzle it over the bars and cut into 12 rows by 6 rows.
