Creamy pearl onions in a savory white sauce, a nostalgic holiday side dish reminiscent of Grandma's cooking.
Ingredients:
  • 0.75 cup water
  • salt to taste
  • 2 cups peeled pearl onions
  • 1.5 cups cold whole milk
  • 0.25 cup quick-mixing flour (such as Wondra®), or more as needed
Instructions:
  • In a saucepan, bring water and salt to a boil. Add pearl onions and cook until tender, about 5 to 10 minutes. Drain, saving 1/2 cup of the water; return onions to the pan and stir in butter.
  • Combine milk and quick-mixing flour in a bowl, then pour into the onion mixture. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring until thickened, about 10-15 minutes. Add more quick-mixing flour if needed for desired consistency.
