Make delicious German runzas using frozen roll dough filled with seasoned beef, cabbage, and onions for a quick and easy meal.
Ingredients:
  • cooking spray
  • 1 (3 pound) package frozen dinner rolls (such as Rhodes®)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 head cabbage, finely chopped
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1.5 quarts vegetable oil for frying, or as needed
Instructions:
  • Grease a 13x18-inch rimmed baking sheet with cooking spray. Arrange frozen rolls on the sheet and cover with greased plastic wrap. Allow to thaw and double in size, 3 to 5 hours.
  • Around 45 minutes before the dough has finished rising, warm 1 tablespoon of oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Cook ground beef until browned, for about 5 minutes. Then, add onion and cook until softened, for about 5 minutes. Add cabbage and cook until it softens, stirring occasionally for about 10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Spread the mixture onto a rimmed baking sheet and allow it to cool for 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Preheat 2 inches of oil in a deep-fryer or electric skillet to 350°F (175°C).
  • Flatten a dinner roll and fill with cooled cabbage mixture, then seal the edges and repeat with the rest of the rolls and filling while the oil heats up.
  • Fry bierocks in batches of three in hot oil until each side is golden brown, about 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 minutes. Place on paper towels to drain.
