Gooey Caramel-Pecan Brownies

Indulge in Betty's Best homemade brownies - rich, caramel-pecan delights that will leave you craving more.
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 eggs
  • 2/3 cup Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup baking cocoa
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans, if desired
  • 12 vanilla caramels
  • 1 tablespoon milk
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F and generously grease a 9x9x2 inch square pan.
  • Combine sugar, shortening, vanilla, and eggs in a medium bowl, then mix in flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
  • Evenly smooth out the batter in the pan, then generously sprinkle with crunchy pecans. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • In a 1-quart saucepan, melt caramels with milk over low heat, stirring often, until smooth. Drizzle the caramel sauce over the warm brownies and let them cool completely. Cut into 16 pieces by slicing first into 4 rows and then into 4 rows again.
