Italian Easter bread with zesty Valencia orange and savory Romano cheese. Perfect for a festive Easter morning.
Ingredients:
  • 5 cups bread flour, or more as needed
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 0.66666668653488 cup grated Romano cheese
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons active dry yeast
  • 1 medium orange
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly
  • 3 large eggs, beaten slightly
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
Instructions:
  • In a large bowl, mix together 5 cups of flour, 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons of sugar, Romano cheese, cinnamon, and salt until well combined. Let it sit for a moment.
  • Combine warm water and yeast in a small bowl. Let it sit until fully dissolved and bubbly, for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Grate the peel and squeeze the juice of an orange into a large bowl. Mix in melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract until fully incorporated. Stir in the yeast mixture, then gradually add and stir in the flour mixture.
  • Place dough on a lightly floured surface and knead for 8 to 10 minutes, adding up to 1 extra cup of flour as needed. Transfer to an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise until almost doubled in size, approximately 30 to 60 minutes.
  • Gently press the dough down, cover it, and allow it to rise again until it nearly doubles in size, which should take between 30 to 60 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to a cozy 300 degrees F (150 degrees C) and generously grease two 8-inch round loaf pans.
  • Divide the dough in half and form into loaves. Transfer the loaves to the prepared pans, cover, and allow to rise until nearly doubled in size, 30 to 60 minutes.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for about 70 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack after removing from the oven.
