Irresistible grilled ham and cheese sandwich with egg, spinach, and gruyere on rye.
Ingredients:
  • Butter
  • 2 slices rye bread
  • Enough sliced ham to form a 1/4-inch layer to cover a slice of rye bread
  • Small handful of baby spinach (or sliced young chard)
  • A few slices of gruyere cheese
Instructions:
  • Make the perfect fried egg: Melt a couple teaspoons of butter in a non-stick pan over medium heat. Once the butter is bubbly, crack the egg into the pan. Cook until the whites are set and the yolk reaches your desired consistency. Plate and enjoy!
  • Toast one side of buttered rye bread: Preheat a cast iron pan or griddle over medium-high heat. Spread butter on one side of a slice of rye bread and place it butter side down in the pan.
  • Layer ham, spinach, egg, and cheese on bread: Start with ham on the bread, then spinach, followed by the egg. Finish with a layer of cheese before adding the second slice of rye bread on top.
  • Spread butter on the top slice of bread. Using a metal spatula, carefully flip the sandwich over to toast the other side. Adjust any spillage by gently edging the ingredients back in place if necessary.
  • Toast the bread until golden and the cheese is melted. Press with a spatula to ensure even cooking. Cook until golden on the other side. Remove from pan, slice in half, and enjoy!
