Delicious Mennonite ground cherry pie with sweet brown sugar crumb topping - fragrant and flavorful!
Ingredients:
  • 2.5 cups ground cherries
  • 0.5 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 (9 inch) pie shell
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons white sugar
Instructions:
  • Heat your oven to a toasty 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
  • First, gently rinse the ground cherries and arrange them in a fresh unbaked pie shell. Combine brown sugar and 1 tablespoon of flour, then evenly distribute the mixture over the cherries. Next, drizzle water over the top. In a separate bowl, combine 3 tablespoons of flour and 3 tablespoons of sugar. Cut in the butter until the mixture becomes crumbly. Finish by sprinkling the crumb mixture over the cherry filling.
  • After preheating the oven, bake at the higher temperature for 15 minutes, then lower the temperature to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) and bake for an additional 25 minutes.
