Cozy ham and beans dish with tender great northern beans, savory diced ham, onions, brown sugar, and fragrant spices for a hearty and tasty meal.
Ingredients:
  • 1 pound dry great Northern beans
  • 0.5 pound cooked ham, diced
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 0.5 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon dried parsley
  • 0.25 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 6 cups water, or as needed to cover
Instructions:
  • Rinse the beans thoroughly, then place them in a large stockpot. Cover with cold water and soak overnight or for at least 8 hours. Drain and rinse the beans before using in the recipe.
  • Transfer the beans back to the stockpot and combine with ham, onion, sugar, parsley, and cayenne pepper. Pour in sufficient water to cover everything and season with salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer until the beans are tender, adding more water if necessary. This process will take approximately 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
