Transform holiday ham into a decadent mac and cheese casserole with fresh green apple slices for a delicious twist.
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup elbow macaroni
  • 0.25 cup butter
  • 0.25 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons brown mustard
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 1 pinch ground black pepper to taste
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 cups cubed fully cooked ham
  • 2 cups peeled and sliced Granny Smith apples
  • 1.5 cups soft bread crumbs
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure a perfect bake.
  • Bring a generously salted pot of water to a vigorous boil. Cook elbow macaroni until al dente, about 8 minutes, stirring occasionally. Drain well.
  • In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt 1/4 cup butter. Whisk in flour, brown sugar, mustard, salt, and black pepper until combined. Pour in milk and bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low. Whisk constantly for about 5 minutes until the sauce is thick and bubbly. Add macaroni, ham, and apple slices to the sauce and mix well. Transfer the mixture to a 2-quart casserole dish.
  • In a bowl, mix soft bread crumbs with 2 tablespoons of melted butter, then evenly sprinkle over the casserole.
  • Bake in the hot oven until the casserole is bubbly and the crumb topping is golden brown, approximately 35 minutes.
