Savory cabbage and hamburger casserole with cheese is a hearty family favorite ready in no time.
Ingredients:
  • 1 head green cabbage, shredded
  • 0.5 cup uncooked long-grain white rice
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1.5 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 0.5 teaspoon dried sweet basil
  • 0.25 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 0.5 teaspoon white sugar
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 (28 ounce) can whole tomatoes
  • 10 slices American cheese
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to a toasty 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius).
  • Layer the cabbage evenly in a 9x13-inch baking dish, then scatter the rice over the top.
  • Preheat a large skillet over medium heat. Brown the beef in the skillet, stirring occasionally, for about 5 to 7 minutes until crumbly; drain any excess grease. Stir in onion, oregano, basil, garlic powder, and thyme. Cook and stir until the onion turns transparent, approximately 5 minutes. Finally, season with sugar, salt, and pepper for added flavor.
  • Spread the savory beef mixture over the bed of fluffy rice and crunchy cabbage in the baking dish. Crush the tomatoes in the can using your hands and drizzle them generously over the beef. Seal in all the delicious flavors by covering the baking dish with aluminum foil.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour 15 minutes until rice is tender. Uncover and place American cheese slices over the casserole. Allow it to sit until the cheese melts and absorbs the juices, for 15 to 20 minutes.
