Indulge in the ultimate comfort dessert: homemade Southern banana pudding made with pantry essentials. Sweet, creamy, and authentic, with just the right blend of pudding and cookies.
Ingredients:
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 0.333 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.25 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1.5 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 (11 ounce) box vanilla wafers
  • 4 large bananas, sliced
  • 0.25 cup powdered sugar
Instructions:
  • In a medium saucepan, combine milk, sugar, flour, and salt. Cook over medium-low heat, whisking often, until the mixture thickens and gently simmers, about 5-10 minutes.
  • In a small bowl, whisk egg yolks until smooth. Gradually stir in 3/4 cup of the hot milk mixture. Pour egg yolk mixture back into the pot with the hot milk. Cook, stirring constantly, until thickened and creamy, for about 5 minutes. Remove from heat, add butter and vanilla, and stir until smooth. Allow to cool for about 10 minutes before serving.
  • Keep 6 vanilla wafers aside. Create a base layer in an 8-inch square baking dish with the remaining wafers. Add a layer of sliced bananas, followed by another layer of wafers. Pour half of the pudding mixture on top. Add another layer of bananas and the remaining wafers. Finish by spreading the remaining pudding, ensuring it fills any gaps. Lightly cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 4 hours or overnight.
  • Whip heavy cream with an electric mixer until soft peaks form, gradually adding powdered sugar.
  • Take the banana pudding out of the fridge. Top it with a generous layer of whipped cream. Crush the remaining vanilla wafers and sprinkle them over the whipped cream. Enjoy right away.
