Indulge in homemade soft and buttery pretzels, crafted from scratch, shaped into knots, dipped, and baked to perfection.
Ingredients:
  • 1.25 cups warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C), or more as needed
  • 4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon white sugar
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup white sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, or more as needed
  • 0.5 cup baking soda
  • 4 cups hot water
  • 0.25 cup kosher salt, for topping
Instructions:
  • In a medium bowl, pour 1 ¼ cups of warm water. Stir in yeast and 1 teaspoon of sugar until dissolved. Allow it to sit for about 10 minutes until creamy.
  • In a large bowl, combine flour, ½ cup sugar, and salt. Create a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and oil. Mix thoroughly until a dough forms. If the mixture seems dry, incorporate one or two additional tablespoons of water.
  • Knead the dough until smooth for about 7 minutes. Transfer the dough to a large bowl, lightly oil it, and coat the dough with oil. Cover with plastic wrap and allow it to rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  • Preheat the oven to a toasty 450 degrees F (230 degrees C) and grease 2 baking sheets.
  • In a large bowl, carefully pour 4 cups of hot water. Mix in the baking soda until completely dissolved, then set it aside.
  • Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface, divide it into 12 equal pieces, roll each piece into a rope, and twist them into pretzel shapes.
  • After shaping all the dough, immerse each pretzel in the baking soda-hot water mix and transfer to the baking sheets. Finish by sprinkling with kosher salt.
  • Bake until golden brown in a preheated oven for approximately 8 minutes.
