Kansas City Barbecue Sauce

Sweet and spicy homemade Kansas City barbecue sauce with a rich tomato base.
Ingredients:
  • 5 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 4 finely chopped garlic cloves
  • 2 cups tomato sauce or ketchup
  • 1/2 cup apple juice
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons paprika
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon chipotle powder, optional
  • Kosher salt, to taste
  • Cayenne, to taste
Instructions:
  • In a pot over medium heat, melt the butter until bubbling. Add the onion and cook until golden. Stir in the garlic and sauté for an additional 2 minutes.
  • Combine all remaining ingredients in the pot, stirring until well mixed. Allow the mixture to simmer gently for a minimum of 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours. Adjust the spice level and saltiness with cayenne and salt to taste before serving. Enjoy this versatile sauce on ribs, chicken, or pork shoulder.
