Maple shortbread bars with chocolate topping: Rich buttery toffee flavor in every bite. A beloved family recipe for three generations.
Ingredients:
  • 0.5 cup butter, softened
  • 0.5 cup vegetable shortening
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 0.5 teaspoon maple extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 1 (12 ounce) bag chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons chopped walnuts
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) for the perfect cooking temperature.
  • Cream together butter, vegetable shortening, brown sugar, egg, vanilla extract, and maple extract until creamy. Mix in flour and salt, then gently press the dough into a 10x15-inch baking dish.
  • Bake until the crust is firm and golden brown, approximately 15 minutes.
  • Use a double boiler to melt chocolate chips over simmering water, stirring often and scraping down the sides with a rubber spatula to prevent burning. Spread the melted chocolate over the crust once removed from the oven. Sprinkle with walnuts, cut into bars while warm, and allow the chocolate to set for about an hour before serving.
