Indulgent devil's food chocolate cake with maple-walnut frosting and a fall-themed garnish.
Ingredients:
  • 1 box devil’s food cake mix with pudding
  • Water, oil and eggs called for on cake mix box
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 4 to 6 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 3 tablespoons whipping cream
  • 1 cup walnut halves
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • Chocolate leaves
  • Chopped walnuts
  • Maple syrup
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (if using a dark or nonstick pan, set it to 325°F). Grease 2 (8- or 9-inch) round pans generously. Follow the cake mix instructions on the box using water, oil, and eggs, then pour the batter into the pans.
  • Bake for 28 to 32 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool for 10 minutes in the pans, then transfer them to cooling racks. Let them cool completely, around 1 1/2 hours.
  • Combine powdered sugar and butter in a large bowl and mix on low speed until well blended. Stir in 4 tablespoons of maple syrup and whipping cream, then beat until smooth. Adjust the consistency by adding 1 to 2 more tablespoons of maple syrup if needed. If the frosting is too thick, gradually beat in more maple syrup until desired consistency is reached.
  • To a small food processor, add walnuts and 1 to 2 tablespoons of maple syrup. Blend until it becomes a smooth paste. Mix in 1/3 cup of frosting until fully incorporated.
  • Place one cake layer, top side down, on a serving plate. Fill the cake with walnut filling, and then top with the second layer, top side up. Frost the cake with frosting. Use a teaspoon to create S-shaped swirls on the sides and top of the cake. Garnish with chocolate leaves, chopped walnuts, and a drizzle of maple syrup.
