Bake hearty Mennonite-style cabbage, potato, and sausage casserole with bread, milk, and eggs for a comforting meal.
Ingredients:
  • 1 small head cabbage
  • 2 cups diced potatoes
  • 1 (16 ounce) package smoked kielbasa sausage, sliced
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 4 slices bread, cut into cubes
  • 0.5 cup butter, sliced
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) for the perfect cooking temperature.
  • Peel off and rinse outer leaves of cabbage; use them to line the entire bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish. Shred the rest of the cabbage.
  • Mix together shredded cabbage, potatoes, and sausage in a large bowl, then evenly spread them over the cabbage leaves in the baking dish.
  • In a large bowl, combine milk, beaten eggs, salt, and pepper until mixture is smooth. Gently mix in bread cubes and let sit for 1 to 2 minutes to absorb the liquid. Pour over cabbage mixture and top with butter.
  • Cook in the oven until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown, approximately 45 minutes.
