Baked mostaccioli pasta with hearty meat sauce and melty mozzarella cheese for a delicious Italian-inspired dish.
Ingredients:
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil, divided
  • 0.5 cup finely chopped onion, divided
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced, divided
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 (15 ounce) cans tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano
  • 1 tablespoon dried basil
  • 2 teaspoons white sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons dried parsley
  • 0.5 teaspoon thyme
  • 0.5 teaspoon dried savory
  • 0.5 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground marjoram
  • 0.5 cup diced green bell pepper
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 (16 ounce) package mostaccioli pasta
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 (8 ounce) package fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced
Instructions:
  • In a large saucepan over medium heat, sauté 1/4 cup of diced onion and 2 minced garlic cloves in 1 teaspoon of olive oil until onions are slightly translucent, about 5 minutes. Raise heat to medium-high, then add beef broth, tomato sauce, oregano, basil, sugar, parsley, thyme, savory, red pepper flakes, and marjoram. Let it simmer and stir occasionally until flavors meld together, about 15 to 20 minutes.
  • In a large saucepan over medium-high heat, sauté 1/4 cup onion and 1 garlic clove in 1 teaspoon of olive oil until onion is tender, about 5 minutes. Add ground beef and cook until browned and crumbly, about 10-15 minutes. Drain any excess grease.
  • Combine the ground beef and green bell pepper with the tomato sauce mixture and let it simmer for 15 minutes.
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Combine the meat sauce, water, mostaccioli, and shredded mozzarella cheese in a 3-quart glass baking dish, mix thoroughly, and cover with aluminum foil.
  • After baking for 20 minutes, uncover and top the mostaccioli mixture with mozzarella cheese slices. Continue baking for an additional 10 minutes until the cheese is melty and bubbly.
