Indulgent Monte Cristo-inspired strata with ham, mustard, and Gruyere cheese.
Ingredients:
  • 1 loaf (20 oz) country white bread, crusts removed and thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup spicy brown mustard
  • 14 oz sliced Black Forest ham
  • 3 1/2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese (14 oz)
  • 3 tablespoons chopped fresh sage leaves
  • 4 eggs
  • 3 cups milk
  • 2 teaspoons ground pepper
Instructions:
  • Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease a 13x9-inch (3-quart) baking dish generously with shortening or cooking spray.
  • Begin by lining the bottom of the baking dish with a layer of bread slices. Gently brush them with 2 tablespoons of mustard. Next, layer half of the ham slices, followed by 1 cup of shredded cheese and 1 tablespoon of sage. Repeat the layers once more, ensuring to save 1 1/2 cups of shredded cheese for the final topping.
  • In a large bowl, vigorously whisk together eggs, milk, and ground pepper until well combined. Pour the mixture evenly over the layers in the baking dish, ensuring the bread soaks up most of the liquid. Sprinkle with the remaining cheese and 1 tablespoon of fresh sage.
  • Grease a sheet of foil and cover the dish. Allow it to sit for 30 minutes before placing it in the oven.
  • Bake for 35 minutes or until dish is cooked through and bubbling. Remove foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes until cheese is lightly golden on top.
  • Allow it to rest for 10 minutes before indulging in its deliciousness.
